How to Use Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an alternative therapy based on the idea that blocked energy in the body causes everything from physical pain to psychiatric disorders. EFT works on the meridian system in the same way as acupuncture but without the needles. Follow these steps and see if Emotional Freedom Technique is for you.

1

Understand that Emotional Freedom Technique is a mind and body technique. Treatment involves physically tapping on energy points and mentally focusing on pain or emotional problems at the same time.

2

Try the karate chop point along the outside of your non-dominant hand, beneath your little finger. Tap this area with the second and third fingers of your opposite hand.

3

Find the sore spots located at both the upper right and upper left parts of the chest. Pressing in either area usually reveals a sore spot, which should be rubbed while saying an affirmation or concentrating on your problem. Many feel that this is a more effective move than the karate chop.

4

Tap the points of the energy meridian of your face. First tap the bridge of your nose with the second and third fingers of your left hand. Alternate with tapping on the outer side of one of your eyes. Breathe slowly and deeply while doing this and think about your problem. If the problem is stress, use positive affirmations.

5

Move to the bony area underneath the eye and tap. Next, tap above and below your lips at the same time.

6

See what happens when you tap on other energy points in the body. These pathway points are located at the collarbone, under the arm, below the nipple, thumb, index finger, middle finger and little finger.

7

Contact a trained EFT practitioner for more complicated treatment and teaching.

Tips & Warnings

Emotional Freedom Technique is based on Thought Field Therapy, a traditional Chinese therapy that treats blocked energy.

Like many alternative therapies, EFT is still being studied for scientific proof. Some studies have shown promise when EFT is used for treatment of phobias and anxiety.
